Once again, JC Penny and The Salvation Army have teamed up to sponsor the Angel Giving Tree, a nationwide donation program to help children and seniors in need during the Christmas season.

Entering its third year, the Angel Giving Tree has helped more than sixty thousand "angels". And this year the program has expanded by allowing company's or organziations to adopt ten or more angels as a group instead of just as an individual. Just choose "find a group" to search for existing groups, or choose "create a group" before selecting your angels(s). This way your angel adoption will count toward your group's adoption goal.

To select an angel, visit Angel Giving Tree Online . There you will be guided through a short Angel selection process, then after choosing an Angel online, you will receive a confirmation email with information on how to shop for your Angel from their wish list and where to ship your gifts.

As a part of the Obama administration's Joining Forces Initiative, Goodwill will work with serviceman to come up with a life plan that identifies and sets realistic, achievable goals. Veterans are also given access to a variety of family strengthening services offered by Goodwill and if they can’t meet the veteran's needs, they will connect them with a community partner who can.

Veterans will also have access to Goodwill's GCFLearnFree, a program that offers more than 750 self-paced online courses in computers, math, reading and more.

Childhood revisted, booth shopping at the Jumping Flea

Every Saturday was errand day. The one day in the week where my mom raced around trying to complete everything she'd been unable to do during the week. And of course, she lumped us in her game plans from helping her clean the house to shopping for groceries or heading to the area mall.

Between you and I, I hated Saturdays. Who wants to spend half of the morning cleaning up or looking for women's underwear? Not me, I wanted to be left alone in front of the TV to catch up with the current escapades of Superfriends or outside riding with my bicycle gang.

Alas, I had no such luck. So I guess I made the most of it, especially when one of my mother's favorite errands included a trip to the local flea market, The Jumping Flea. This is where my love for picking through old junk and all things thrifty was born.

Admittedly, I hadn't been back in years, but this morning as I strolled the aisles of this open air market filled with everything from some one's kitchen junk drawer to their attic, it felt like I'd never taken a break. I was still wowed by all the stuff and wished I had more money in my wallet so I could take away every thing I laid my hands on. Even now I wished I'd had five bucks left on me to pick up the Hardy Boys lunch box circa 1977. I could so see myself pimping that at the disco. Le sigh...

Local Project Puts Food in Kids' Backpacks

Most children take a backpack to school filled with required school supplies that will allow them to do their school work. But this weekend about a hundred local school children will be bringing home an extra backpack -- one donated by the Children's Hunger Project.

I met Mr. Barnes personally a couple months back during the initial planning phase of this project. And he's really passionate about his program and didn't ask for much just that people realize that there's a need out there and that if we're able to fill that need we should step up in any capacity that we can and not just with his program.

Coinciding with the start of the school year, at least 100 students at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay will receive backpacks on Friday that will be filled with enough food to see them through the weekend. Menu items include: cereal, Vienna sausages, beef ravioli, spaghetti & meatballs, milk & juice, a snack bar and various fruit desserts.

The Hunger Project is financed through private and corporate donations, some of which come from members of the group's board of directors and the public as word spreads.

Family Circle magazine continues its partnership with Goodwill's Donate Movement! In its third year with the program, Family Circle and its 19 million readers have made a huge impact on this grassroot program who's main purpose is to let people know that their donations "have the power to make a difference in people’s lives, strengthen communities and create a healthier environment."

Since 2009, Family Circle magazine and their readers have donated almost 20 million pounds of goods to Goodwill. And this year they want to beat some records. So much so, they are sponsoring a contest where they are asking people to take a photo of what donating means to them or a picture of their kids with their Goodwill donations.

London-based All the World magazine is hosting a global photography competition to capture the essence of Salvation Army. As neighbors of the The Salvation Army International Headquarters in London, All the World magazine wanted to provide a way for the world to really see the true impact of the Salvation army on a local level.

And with a division of the organization in more than 120 countries, All the World magazine editor Kevin Sims’ says the lens could capture anything from 'an open-air meeting in Africa, a soup-run in Europe, a Salvation Army school in Asia, or a worship service in the Americas.'

This week the Salvation Army will celebrate National Salvation Army week across the country. The Detroit Salvation Army has made the week an annual tradition through their “Doing the Most Good” Week.

DMG Week encourages people to do something positive for their community. They've even come up with a list of tips to help people achieve do-gooder status and Salvation Army has posted some of them on their blog. We've listed some of the list below.

IDEAS FOR “DOING THE MOST GOOD”

•When you buy in bulk, share your surplus by dropping off any non-perishable food item to your local Salvation Army.
•Bring flowers to work and share them with your coworkers.
•Volunteer to be a tutor in a Salvation Army after-school program.
•Join The Salvation Army in their visits to sing to seniors and residents of nursing homes.
•Offer a couple of hours of baby-sitting service to friends and family.

The Salvation Army Sets Red Kettle Record for Sixth Straight Year

Despite a recession, the Salvation Army sets red kettle record for the sixth straight year! Want to know just how much was raised during their annual Christmas Campaign?

Hold your socks. The Salvation Army raised a record $142 million. The charity organization says that the success was based upon not only employing traditional efforts with volunteers, celebrity endorsements and corporate partners but also by using new technology and social media tools.

Salvation also concentrated much of their efforts on capturing a younger audience by kicking off their Red Kettle Campaign during the Dallas Cowboy's Thanksgiving game with a concert headlined by Keith Urban and also hosting a "Rock the Red Kettle" concert.

The Salvation Army also entered the digital age with their trailblazing debit card machines right at the kettle, which allowed even more people to give even when they didn't have cash on them.

“In the 21st century people are looking for new ways to support and interact with the charities that are important to them. The Salvation Army is keeping pace so donors have a variety of options to give,” said Commissioner Roberts. “The Red Kettle Campaign incorporated several aspects of the changing face of giving by raising awareness through social media and allowing the next generation of donors to give online or through their phones.”

Record Album Blow-Out Sale

St. Paul de Vincent of Atlanta is planning a record album blow-out sale of epic porportions! They recently consolidated all of their record albums from 10 thrift stores in the surrounding Atlanta area in order to sell them at a mega sell at great discounted prices!

From January 28-29, 2011 their Chamblee location, 5463 Peachtree Road in Chamblee, Ga, will host the event from 10am-6pm. According to organizers, most albums will sell for $1 while box sets will sell for $3. All proceeds to benefit St. Paul de Vincent's programs!

Out With the Old

I clean out my closet twice a year or maybe more. It's become so much of a habit I look forward to it. It's like a carthasis for me or like a heavy load that will explode if I don't let it go! So you probably can guess I mark the first of the year as my biggest purging period.

And this year, I really purged. I went through two closets and removed everything I didn't wear, couldn't wear or didn't need to wear anymore because it looked so babby I was wrong for trying to eek out any more mileage out of the garmet.

After all was said and done, I ended up packing one linen bag and four twenty-gallon trash bags with everything from clothes, books, shoes, unused Christmas gifts, a clothing steamer and even a wig. But what made it so bad was that after all this I could've purged more. I know it's disgusting at the amount of stuff I have, but admittedly I have things in my closet from my college days and shoes older than some 10th graders.

After packing or shoving it all in my trunk, I'm going to divide the donations with two of my favorite thrift stores Molly Mutt which benefits the local Humane Society Animal Shelters and Daily Bread Thrift Store which benefits a local soup kitchen providing food for the homeless.

If you haven't cleaned out your closets in a while, you should it feels awesome. I can actually see all my shoes now with all the clothes gone. Now if I can only push myself to clean out my makeup drawer...

But this time it's a traditionally western item that we found. The essential blazer! And this one is a fabulous find. Chic hand-tailored and vintage this blazer was was commissioned in the 1960s by Noble Fashions out of Hong Kong for a Mr. Arthur Natowich.

Since I live in a retired military, I come across alot of vintage clothing obtained overseas by military wives. What always amazes me is the condition of the clothes. As if they kept many of the garments locked away for only special occassions. So, I felt pretty lucky coming across this piece, a vintage Chinese robe made by Youth of Shanghai, China.

It's in such pristine condition it looks as if its only been worn once or twice. Too bad it's not my size though because it would be a keeper:(

Burlington Coat Factory Donates Thousands of Books to Benefit Goodwill’s Job Training Programs

Burlington Coat Factory recently donated 32,000 children’s books to Goodwill Industries to help support their mission of helping people find jobs. This generous donation of books to 113 local, independent Goodwill agencies across the United States will help provide more than 533 hours of Goodwill career services, such as job search assistance or financial planning courses.

According to Goodwill, more than 350 Burlington Coat Factory stores will donate the books that will in turn be sold in Goodwill stores. The revenue will then be used to fund job training programs and other community programs.

“Giving back to the community has always been part of our heritage at Burlington Coat Factory,” said Thomas Kingsbury, President and Chief Executive Officer of Burlington Coat Factory. “We’re delighted that the book donations will not only provide enjoyment for children and foster their interest in reading, but that the funds raised from their sale at Goodwill agencies nationwide will go towards assisting those in need.”

Prime Vintage Shopping in Toronto

It seems like the more and more we travel overseas the more the selection of vintage shopping seems to improve (see our blog on shopping in Rio de Janeiro). So I'm eager to report that Toronto, Canada is a vintage shoppers dream come true.

Back in September, we went up to attend the Toronto Film Festival. If you've never been, you have to put it on your list of things to do especially if you like movies as much as we do. The selection of movies are great, it's not a budget buster and the amount of celebrity sitings is fantastic.

In between a manic schedule of movie showings, we prowled the city of Toronto for vintage. And like in most cities, many antique and second-hand shops tend to flock together and in Toronto the same holds true with most setting up shop on Queen Street. In fact, in a one block radius you'll find no less than a dozen places to satisfy your second-hand binge.

Many of the shops are resemble boutiques rather than the thrift stores we tend to fall into. They were either chic or hip and filled with hard to find items for every taste. So much so, you'll end up spending hours on Queen Street making sure you don't miss a thing!

A couple of the stores we fell in love with were The Painted Table, which sold more household items and furniture than clothing. But the selection was exceptional. We particularly liked their vintage aprons. Stella Luna also topped our list. Even though the shop isn't as large as the others in the area, it was packed to the gills with great vintage fashion organized by color and an awesome shoe rack.

We were also impressed with Goodwill Toronto on Ronscalles Ave, which intersected Queen Street. Only a half a block away, this particular Goodwill was large, clean and organized. I found alot of fabulous coats and leather bags. It's well worth a visit if you're on Queen Street.

Hanes is using the power of social media to help the less fortunate. With the help of their Facebook Fan page, they have launched a virtual holiday sock drive benefiting The Salvation Army.

Beginning Dec. 1, for every person who “likes” Hanes on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/Hanes) and clicks “Help Hanes Donate,” the brand will donate one pair of socks toward their goal of 500,000 pairs to Salvation Army.

This past summer US Airlines announced a whirlwind blitz of special fares to practically anywhere one of them being a round-trip ticket to Rio de Janeiro for only $250. And since we're notoriously thrifty, Thriftstore Divas couldn't pass up on this deal. So a couple of weeks ago, I took a journey south of the Equator to the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, where we stayed on Copacabana Beach.

Of course we did all the touristy stuff like visiting Corcovado or The Christ the Redeemer, taking the trolley through historical neighborhoof of Santa Teresa, having fresh squeezed fruit juice at one of the dozens of Suco bars, and partying at night in Lapa.

Even though shopping is quite inexpensive in Rio de Janeiro with the U.S. dollar far outpacing the Brazilian Reis and every item over $50 on a pay or layaway system, we weren't hardpressed when we decided to turn our eyes to finding second-hand treasures.

As you can guess, the most fun we had was trying to find a second-hand store in this city whose populaiton rivals New York City. But with a little Googling, it didn't take long for us to end up at No. 143 Sequeira Campo. A mall of more than two dozen antique and second-hand shops situated side-by-side, No. 143 sequeira Campo was dominatyed by a smorgasboard of antique shops, a spattering of second-hand clothing stores and even a really organized record store.

No. 143 sequeira Campo wasn't exactly thrifty shopping since the merchants were all savvy enough to understand the value of their yesteryear items, buying still wouldn't set you too far back (excluding shipping if you can't fit it in your suitcase) due to the current exchange rate. So the next time you're in Rio de Janerio, and want to get a glimpse of their second-hand offerings, No. 143 sequeira Campo is definitely worth a stop!

Dahlonega, Georgia's Second Hand Scene Filled with Gems!

This past week I trekked up to North Georgia to the beautiful town of Dahlonega, Georgia. Reminescent of Andy Griffith's Mayberry you'll think you've stepped back in time as soon as you enter this small country town's city limits. Even though this tiny hamlet of less than 5,000 inhabitants doesn't have a Goodwill or Salvation Army, there are a handful of second-hand stores worth taking a look at!

And I did just that while in this mini-metropolis about an hour's drive north of Atlanta where I ended up visiting three popular outlets, which included two thrift stores that benefit the community and a popular antique mall located in downtown.

My first stop was the local antique mall called Antiques & Collectibles located at 35 East Main Street. The mall consisted of independent merchants who owned individual booths. About fifty in all, it takes about two hours to peruse through every booth. My favorite was a booth owned by Drastic Party Vintage , which was filled to the brim with vintage finds (see the picture below) that would make any retro-minded fashionista drool.

The owner filled not one, but two booths with a smorgasbord of vintage items from vinyl LPS and hats to pumps and groovy clutch purses to die-for costume jewelry! If you're ever in Dahlonega, THIS BOOTH is worthy of a drop-in.

The only draw back to the antique mall is that none of the owners are on-site to answer questions or show you items behind locked cases. However there was a cashier at the front who was pretty friendly and willing to show you any and everything.

After leaving Antiques & Collectibles, I headed over to NOA's Bargain shop at 300 Riley Road. This second-hand store supports No One Alone, a non-profit that supports domestic violence victims in the Dahlonega area. Some of the organizations services include emergency shelter, legal advocacy and court support, a 24-hour crisis line and educational scholarships. The Bargain Shop is opened Monday through Saturday. NOA's Bargain shop sells adult and children clothing as well as kitchen items and furniture. The shop was clean, jam-packed with stuff and the staff was helpful.

After leaving NOA's I headed several miles up the road to The Community Helping Place, who's motto is "Neighbors Helping Neighbors". Located at 2030 Highway 19 North, the Community Helping Place is onloy a five minute drive from downtown Dahlonega. Easily the largest second-hand store in town, The Community Helping Place is divided into a furniture and clothing store. The funds received from sales of second-hand items provides a food pantry, a summer food program, and emergency assistance.

So the next time you find yourself in north Georgia make sure you stop by these lovely gems! If you can't make there don't worry Drastic Party Vintage has an Ebay store as well:)

Estate Finds

Last weekend I went on one of my favorite thrifty shopping adventures -- estate sale shopping! I picked up a few items and most of them goodies such as this vintage leather-bound Decca Record album containing fourteen 45rpm records. The prize record out of the whole bunch was an issue of Judy Garland's Over The Rainbow/You Made Me Love you.

I also found another vintage rhinestone bracelet made in Japan, which I'm really getting a kick out of since I recently discovered that many American women bought jewelry from the country after World War II because labor was much cheaper.

Speaking of the Orient, I also picked up a beautiful vintage 1960s Oriental Cheongsam made by Hong Kong Dress Maker, Dynasty. Made of pure 100% gold silk, this dress is mouthwatering and figure flattering. If I didn't already have so many clothes in my closet already, I'm almost loathe to sell it.

Vintage Postcard Box Set of 1930s San Francisco

Box set of 4x6 black and white photographed, blank- backed vintage postcard box set featuring various landmarks around the city of San Francisco. Originally, the box set came as a set of twenty. There are only nineteen left, but the remaining cards were are in pristine condition and suitable for mailing but of course it would cost more than a penny to mail one now.

Only one owner of this box set who we believe bought the postcards because she didn't own a camera and bought them to remember her trip to the west coast.

1930s Depression Era Vintage Tuxedo

I picked this men's tuxedo up a couple of years ago at an estate sale in Melbourne Florida. It reeks of nostalgia and history. Made during Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal Era, this tux bares the labels of the New Recovery Administration, which was created to help bolster the worst downturn ever in American History.

This 3-piece, black vintage tuxedo is made of 100% wool and can be worn by a spiffy guy or hip chick. Pants are button fly and contain buttons to attach suspenders. Suit jacket was made by Harcon men's fashions. Pants: 30X32, Vest: 30 inch waist.

How Now Brown Elephant — Chic Second Hand Finds in Chi-Town!

I love Chicago — well not during the winter months (Hey! At least I’m being honest) but I love it still the same. While in Chicago, one of my favorite spots is The Brown Elephant Resale Shops. With three locations in Chicago to serve you, you won’t go wrong with which ever Brown Elephant Shop you chose to spend your hard earned duckies in because all of htem all laid out to look like funky, vintage boutiques rather than your atypical thrift store.

Even better? I think all of the stores contain humidifiers because they don’t have that common “I know I’m in a thrift store” smell. You all know the smell I’m talking about. The one that hits you the minute you walk in and its a combination of moldy dust mixed with a funky armpit that spent several days inside of a polyester shirt.

There were quite a few cool jackets which isn’t surprising for Chicago, but I ended up leaving with a cool Levi & Strauss leather belt! Again, I had to think about my luggage restrictions:(

The Rules of Three Snaps Up & a Twist Thriftstore Diva Style

Staying one step ahead of the trends is hard enough, but worrying about how to pay to remain at the forefront can be downright depressing. Style is meant to be fun. An extension of your inner creativity. So why ruin your love for five-inch stilletos, that to-die-for minidress, or vintage jeans with sky-rocketing credit card fees and a stagnant bank account?

Budget style isn't rocket science and it doesn't require tons of available cash. Its just being in the right place at the right time. In my humble opinion, there are 3 easy rules for ‘three snaps up and a twist’ thriftstore diva style: Be open minded, be bold, but beware!

Be open minded. Some of the best finds can be found at your local thrift store, factory liquidator, or even your but bewarefriendly neighborhood Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, many fashionistas are so closed minded that they believe they can only compliment their wardrobe or beauty cache by only shopping the racks or counters of Bergdorf Goodman's.

And it just isn't true! Over the years, I've picked up my wardrobe favorites at the bottom of a pile at Molly Mutt or the local Daily Bread.

Be bold. Although we're in a recession, thrift store shopping should be fun. It's always a walk on the wild side for me. I always find some of the most ecclectic but fabulous stuff. Mind you I probably wouldn't buy it at original cost someplace else but in a thrift store why not be bold? By that racoon hat if you want to. You only paid $5.00 so who cares if it goes out of fashion or was never in. You go it at a steal:)

But beware! There's not much to this motto since you pretty get what you pay for in a thrift store. But just beware that these are second hand items and you can't return them if you find out that puce colored a-line dress really looks horrible on you even sans flourescent lighting.

European Thrift On a Grand Scale!

What's better than a vacation? A vacation filled with thrift store shopping! Last month, we took a 15-day whirlwind vacation to Europe where we visited five different countries (Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, and the Vatican City) and fifteen cities.

While we were there, we kept our eyes open for second hand stores. Of course Europe might not have a second hand store on every corner like we do, but we were able to find a weekly flea market which spanned ten city blocks, an entire neighborhood filled with antique stores and a posh second-hand store in a back alley in Aux Provence, France.

The first leg of our trip started in Madrid, Spain where we stumbled across Madrid's El Rastro Mercado. Like clockwork, every Sunday morning, shoppers flock to Madrid's metropolitan flea market located primarily on Calle de Curtidores but feathers out in a four or five block radius.

As expected El Rastro Mercado was mind boggling and an absolute dream for everyone since almost any object that can be moved is for sale. From brand-new items to items belonging in one's attic or under their kitchen sink.

Madrid is all flea markets. They have an entire street dedicated to eclectic antique stores chock full of handmade lace, hand-carved wood furniture and more religious iconography than the Vatican City.

If it weren't for the baggage limits, I was this close to buying a two-foot tall Virgin Mary statue. Madrid's second hand stores are great, but don't go wild, the prices can be pretty pricey.

After leaving Spain we headed to Aux Provence, France -the city of a hundred fountains. Great food and great shopping . While walking through one of the side streets, I came across "Tzouvailles" a small second-hand store located in a quaint little square. Even though the shop was rather small, the proprietress had a pretty good selection of higher end items like Dolce & Chanel and Yves St. Laurent.

After spending the afternoon in Aux Provence, we headed to spend a few days in Nice. We didn't find any thrift stores, but we had a great time walking through their open-air market which offered everything from fresh seafood, cheese, meats and produce.

So if you're a true die hard second hand store diva and you're ever in Europe I would definitely put El Rastro Mercado!

Value Village Makes Hotlanta Even Hotter!

Hotlanta is hot. The nightlife and entertainment are great. But what many people don't know is that Atlanta has a great second hand shopping scene.

Of course many of you may turn up your nose at thrift stores chains a la Salvation Army and Goodwill, but if you turn up your nose at Atlanta's own Value Village. Then you're making a really big mistake because with 10 different locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area alone, Value Village is the bomb skadiddle!

If you're looking for a prom dress. You'll find it. A Teddy Pendergrass LP? No problem Value Village has it.
All of the stores are usually located in a shopping plaza since they have monstrous square footage that will make your head spin because they've stuffed every nook and cranny with some kind of item. Personally, my favorite Value Village location is 3503 Memorial Drive nestled just on the edge of Atlanta in Decatur, Georgia. I've never walked out empty handed when I've visited this location. Also, I think I like this particular location because it's in a sleepy little plaza, so there's never a fight for parking space.

The next time you're in Hotlanta make sure you check out Value Village, you'll be happy you did:)

Thrifty Furniture in Pittsburgh's Hill District

Our first Road Trip Thrift Store Spotlight will be on two stores (Thrifty Furniture and Computers and East End Community Center)I visited recently in the Pittsburgh, PA area! Thrifty Furniture and Computers and East End Community Thrift are located in one of my favorite parts of the city, the Hill District. These thrift stores which stand side by side are are not as large as say your traditional Salvation Army or Goodwill, but that's what I like about them.

Thrifty Furniture and Computers primarily sells furniture and computers. Unfortunately, I couldn't really take advantage of this store's offerings due to the 40lb weight limit for luggage. HOWEVER, I picked up a pair of killer navy blue Stuart Weitzman half boots at East End Community Thrift for only $2. (Look out for them on our upcoming Ebay store because I'm going to be selling them:)

The East End Community Thrift (Thrifty) is an all volunteer-run thrift shop which provides quality, low cost used clothing and household goods to the surrounding community. Since its inception in 1993, Thrifty has worked with over 100 area homeless programs to offer their residents vouchers to shop free for items they need for themselves and their families. The community service site for many organizations, such as Renewal. Senior citizens from The National Urban League (formerly AARP) are an integral part of Thrifty, overseeing many of the daily operations at the store.
